US OPEN 2011: Andy Roddick defeats rain, courts, Ferrer to move into quarters

Thursday, September 8, 2011
It took three days and two courts, but Andy Roddick managed to outlast No. 5 seed David Ferrer, advancing into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
The match was scheduled for Tuesday, but showers pushed the match to the following day, where Roddick went up a break of serve to lead 3-1 when rain suspended the match after just 16 minutes of play.
Roddick and Ferrer returned to Louis Armstrong Stadium and completed two more games on a sunny Thursday morning. With Roddick leading, the No. 21 seed complained about a hairline crack in the court with water bubbling beneath the surface.
"I looked down and saw a little crack with seven or eight nickel sized drops of water on it, but it looked too perfectly placed," said Roddick. "I dried it off, played the next game, went back to play the point and saw it was there again. That's when I realized we had a problem."
The players left the court and returned an hour later after tournament officials patched the surface up, but the job was not to Roddick's liking; water was still seeping from the crack. After much deliberation with tournament official Brian Earley, the players moved to Court 13, a much smaller venue, to complete their match.
An electric atmosphere was in the air as the Court 13 stands, which hold just 584 people, were filled beyond capacity before both players even began warming up. With play finally underway once again, Roddick easily held serve twice more to take the opening set.
"I like playing the smaller, more intimate courts when I can," said Roddick. "I haven't always gotten that opportunity here. There are so many great courts here that I just haven't been a part of at all."
A loose service game by Ferrer in the opening game of the second set gave a break point opportunity to Roddick, who took full advantage by unleashing a forehand winner up the line. While Ferrer continued to struggle in his own service games, the American did not face a single break point in the first two sets of the match. Ferrer managed to fight off two set points at 3-5 with some aggressive baseline play, but Roddick easily served things out at 5-4 to take a commanding two-set lead.
The Spaniard wasn't about to go down quietly though, beginning to get more returns of serve in play and trying to be more aggressive in the baseline rallies. He earned his first break point of the match with Roddick serving at 0-1 and converted on it with a forehand winner. With Roddick down 1-4, he began to get increasingly frustrated with his surroundings, loudly complaining about net-cord calls and television cameras filiming the match. He managed to save a set point while serving down 2-5 with a strong forehand approach, but a service winner from Ferrer in the next game clinched the set for the Spaniard.
The match looked to be heading toward a deciding fifth set when Ferrer hit a forehand winner on his fourth break point opportunity to take a 3-2 lead. Roddick dug deep though, immediately erasing the lead by clawing back from a 40-0 deficit on Ferrer's serve to level the match at 3-3.
With Ferrer serving at 4-4, a break from the net cord gave Roddick a break-point opportunity, which he made the most of with a down-the-line winner. The American easily served out the match and smiled in disbelief, high-fiving fans in the stands after moving into the quarterfinals.
Roddick will now play No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, a straight-set winner over Gilles Muller earlier in the day.

US OPEN 2011: Russian Pavlyuchenkova prevails over Schiavone in marathon battle

US OPEN 2011: Russian Pavlyuchenkova prevails over Schiavone in marathon battle

Monday, September 5, 2011

No. 17 seed Anatasia Pavlyuchenkova won just three games in her fourth-round encounter with Francesca Schiavone at last year's US Open, but she did a whole lot better this time, advancing to her first-ever quarterfinal in Flushing with a nearly three-hour 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory that featured plenty of service breaks and shifts of momentum.

"I tried to be aggressive and not let her play her game," said Pavlyuchenkova. "She's very smart and puts a lot of spin (on her shots), so as soon as I slowed down my rhythm, she's just there and she controlled the point.

Both players struggled mightily on their serve, with each player losing their serve twice in the first six games of the match. Schiavone had two break-point opportunities to serve out the set at 5-3, but the penetrating groundstrokes from the former US Open Junior Champion erased those chances, and she ultimately hit a forehand winner to level the match at 4-4. A forehand passing shot on the run from Pavlyuchenkova gave her a break point in the next game, and she made good on it when Schiavone dumped a slice backhand into the net.

The Italian is known for her fight on court, and she dug deep with Pavlyuchenkova serving for the set, earning a break point by tracking down a seemingly unreachable drop volley from the Russian. One point later, Pavlyuchenkova sent a forehand well long to give the break of serve right back. With the Russian serving to stay in the set at 5-6, Schiavone laced a forehand passing shot up the line to earn set point, and the No. 17 seed finally caved in, hitting a double fault to end the set.

Pavlyuchenkova recovered from her missed chances perfectly by breaking serve immediately to start the second set, but then lost her serve at love to level the match. A backhand winner from Pavlyuchenkova led to a third consecutive break at 2-1. She held on to the lead in a nervy service game, finally converting on her sixth game-point opportunity. The Russian held serve at love to go up 5-3 and then rifled a forehand passing shot on set point to level the contest at one set each.

Pavlyuchenkova broke Schiavone for the second consecutive time to lead 2-0, but Fran converted on her second break point in the very next game with a strong forehand approach. The pair continued to hold serve until Schiavone attempted to stay in the match at 4-5. A strong return from Pavlyuchenkova forced a backhand error from the 2010 French Open champion, bringing up two match points. A missed backhand volley and second serve return erased those two chances, but Schiavone then double faulted to bring up another match point. The No. 17 seed made sure not to waste her third chance to close out the match, ripping a forehand winner down the line to end the contest and send her into quarterfinals.

Pavlyuchenkova will now play Serena Williams for a place in the semifinals.

"I don't want to go out there and enjoy just being on the center court playing against Serena," said Pavlyuchenkova. "I would like to do well, try to fight, and with my effort I try to beat her."

Match Facts

- Payvlyuchenkova hit 30 winners to 46 unforced errors

- Schiavone hit 38 winners to 49 unforced errors

- Pavlyuchenkova won the Girls Singles title at the US Open in 2006

US OPEN 2011: Andrea Petkovic advances to first US Open quarterfinal

Monday, September 5, 2011

A late push from Carla Suarez Navarro was not enough to stop No. 10 seed Andrea Petkovic from moving into her first US Open quarterfinal with a routine 6-1, 6-4 victory.

"I think it's just having experience at this point," said Petkovic. "I was a good player last year, but I would crumble in the big moments or wasn't sure what shot to hit in important points. I'm much more confident with those things now."

Suarez-Navarro was playing in the second week of the US Open for the first time in her career and showed no signs of intimidation in the early stages of the match, holding a break point in Petkovic's opening service game and then three more in her next one. The German managed to erase all of them and then earned a break of serve at 2-1 with a strong backhand drive. Petkovic's strong baseline shots routinely came within inches of the baseline and didn't allow Suarez Navarro enough time to hit her loopy groundstrokes, resulting in numerous unforced errors. A double fault sent the Spaniard down 5-1 and then a backhand hit well wide wrapped up the set.

Suarez Navarro fought off two break points in her opening service game and then held a break point to go up 2-0, but sent a backhand well beyond the baseline. A missed forehand approach shot in her next service game Petkovic a 2-1 lead, and then another forehand into the net from Suarez Navarro gave the No. 10 seed a two break advantage.

Serving for the match at 5-2, Petkovic played her first loose game of the match, dumping a forehand into the net to give away one of the breaks. Energized at reducing her deficit, Suarez Navarro began to find the range on her groundstrokes, creating some of the best rallies of the match in the final stages of the contest. With Petkovic serving for the match at 5-4, she won a 20 ball rally to earn match point, and a backhand sent long from Suarez Navarro moved Petkovic into the quarterfinals.

"I lost my focus a little bit at 5-2 and she really raised her level," said Petkovic. "My legs were shaking after some of the rallies in that last game, but if I figured that I was feeling it, she probably was too."

Petkovic will now try to advance into the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career when she plays the winner between No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki and No. 15 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

"I'm going to send my coach to do some scouting for that match because he has to have a job to do," Petkovic said with a smile.

Match Facts

- Petkovic is the only woman to have reached the quarterfinals of three Grand Slams this year (Australian Open, French Open, US Open)

- Suarez Navarro hit 10 winners to 29 unforced errors

- If Samantha Stosur loses her quarterfinal match against Vera Zvonareva, Petkovic is guranteed to re-enter the top 10

- Petkovic is 14-3 on US hard courts this summer
