HOT CELEBRITIES: ABC confirms 'Desperate Housewives' to end

Things will be wrapping up soon for the women of Wisteria Lane.

Paul Lee, president of ABC Entertainment Group, said Sunday during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour that "Desperate Housewives" will be ending in May after an eight season run.

"It is an iconic show," Lee said. "We are so proud of it."

The show's creator, Marc Cherry, said the ending would be bittersweet.

"So I think the only thing harder than creating a hit show is knowing when to end it, especially when you've got, I think, one of the most amazing casts in the history of television, who continue to deliver amazing performances week after week," Cherry said.

Cherry praised the show's crew and writers and said he had been talking to the actors about the waning months left and how they should enjoy it. He said it was important to him that the series go out on top.

"I wanted to go out while the network still saw us as a viable show, while we were still doing well in the ratings, and we were still a force to be contended with," Cherry said. "I wanted to kind of go out in the classiest way possible."
