A 30-year old man is dead and two people were wounded in a shooting involving police following the city's Caribbean Carnival parade on Saturday.

Toronto police said they were called shortly after 8 p.m. about a disturbance involving three men along the parade route on Lake Shore Boulevard West.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ontario's Special Investigations United said gunfire broke out after officers "interacted with the men."

Two men and a woman were then hit by gunfire, the SIU said. All three were taken to hospital.

One man was pronounced dead in hospital and a woman underwent surgery for her injuries, the SIU said. The third person suffered a minor injury.

No other information has been released about the three people.

The SIU, an arm's-length agency which probes police actions resulting in death or serious injury, has been called to investigate. They said nine investigators have been assigned to the case

The festival's CEO Denise Herrera Jackson and CAO Christopher Alexander said in a statement that they are both shocked and saddened by the loss of life.

Toronto's Caribbean Carnival, previously known as Caribana, is touted as the largest celebration of Caribbean culture in North America.

Saturday's 4.5-kilometre parade drew tens of thousands of people, including performers and musicians. The parade ended at approximately 6:30 p.m
